How to Choose the Right Boat

Now that you have decided to buy a boat, you have some other decisions to make. The type of boat you choose will mainly depend on the activities you are interested in and how big a boat will meet your needs. You also need to consider new and used boats for sale. Here is some information to help you choose the right boat.

This is a list of boats grouped by activity:

  • Freshwater Boats: all-purpose fishing, aluminum fishing, bass, bay or flats, center consoles, deck, fish & ski, multi-hull power, pontoon, and walkarounds
  • Saltwater Boats: bay or flats, center consoles, motor yacht or cruisers, multi-hull power, sport fishing, and walkarounds
  • Water Sports Boats: bowriders, deck, inboard ski / wakeboard, and personal watercrafts
  • Overnight Cruising: cabin cruisers, cuddy cabins, motor yacht/cruisers, multi-hull power, sailboats, and sport fishing

There are various types of hulls to choose from:

  • Flat bottom

  • Round hulls

Next, you need to decide how your boat will be powered:

  • Outboard engine
  • Inboard engine
  • Sterndrive engine,
  • Jet propulsion
  • Sails
  • Oars

Finally, you will need to consider how many people you need to accommodate in your boat and the size of boat you will need. Think about not only the number of people but the room needed for them to move around. The length of your boat can start at six feet and grow from there.
